Dear Mr. Warlick,

I found this article to be extremely fascinating and strange as well. The concept that a video game that requires no obvious language arts application has me confused. If the brain can increase it's knowledge of language arts through simple video games wouldn't more schools and even districts have these games as a part of the curriculum? and what science defends this theory because I have always heard, "video games kill brain cells!". So which is it, just curious?

Dear Mr. Warlick,
I agree with your article "Are we wasting Children?", because I believe that some educators and maybe even administrators might encourage less fortunate students to drop out. Your article really opened my eyes to the seriousness of the number of dropouts in high school. If this many teenagers are dropping out how many college students will dropout too? What is the limit and when will we as a society stand up for a fair education without being put down by the teachers and staff? I hope that teachers and staff will realize that hurting the students hurts them because less students leads to the need for less teachers forcing the schools to lay off more highly qualified instructors.

Today in Mrs. Smith's English we started off with the usual Tuesday grammar activity on the board. After Mrs. Smith went over an assignment that had to do with our book The Lord of the Flies. We picked groups, and together we made posters that were covered with all kinds of plots we had encountered from the book. On the poster we put pictures, and of course good old quotes that took us forever to find in the book. Our homework is to finish our Lord of the Flies soundtrack, and any make up work we have left.

Dear Mr. Fisch,

This video that you posted brought very strong emotions to me; it made me think of how I can change my lifestyle to help protect myself from melanoma, because from what I took from the video is how those people said that it is a young person disease and that it is one of the fastest spreading cancers. I think that every teenager should watch this so that they can stop it before it happens to them and possibly takes their life. After you posted this to your blog it made me change some of my lifestyles to protect my skin and to look for signs of melanoma on my skin. I fear that melanoma is going to take many lives if young people like me don’t take the small precautions to help protect ourselves. I think that after you posting this that someone will make this known to everyone and tell them the small precautions to help save themselves. Again I thank you for posting.

Today in Mrs. Smith's class we didn't do much. In class we did the daily grammar activity, and then moved on to our Lord of the Flies chapter quiz on chapters six and seven. After the quiz we spent the rest of the hour reading chapter eight. The homework we were assigned, and have been working on is The Lord of the Flies soundtrack assignment which is worth quite a bit of our grade. Today, April 15, 2011 was a good day. It was a friday and everyone was excited to get out and enjoy the weekend! But before we could start the weekend we had to deal with first hour english. when we started we grabbed our grammar quizes and started on those. That took about 20 minutes at the maximum. After the grammar quiz we pulled out our Romeo and Juliet study guides and our books. But today was the day we did our Act 2 Prolouge. so for the remainder of class we did the prolouges and we have no homework, except some make up work if you have any.

Dear David Warlick,

I am a student and I have had some connections to your article. I think some school districts feel that they are wasting their resources on students, and that they would be better off without that student. What schools do not understand is that these students may not be smart or efficient, but they are at school to gain intelligence and efficiency. Most students who attend school start out all wanting to go to college and make a difference, but as the school year commences, some of these students are neglected and mistreated by parents, teachers, other students, and let's not forget the school system itself. These negative factors change the students minds, they no longer feel like they can make a difference, and they no longer feel the need to go to school anymore because they do not see the point. I feel that school districts do "waste" children, but they are not the only ones. Parents and other students also have an affect on the drop out rate f students.

Thanks to the ACT, we had a late start at school today and were given a few more hours to sleep at home. Students noisily entered the beautiful Mrs. Smith's class at 11:30, and Mrs. Smith told us the homework for tonight right away. Tonight's homework is: PLN4, and any missing work that you have not turned in yet. After discussing tonight's homework, Mrs. Smith showed the class the rest of the Act 3, Scene 5 Romeo and Juliet video. Act 3, Scene 5, is the scene where Juliet finds out that Romeo has killed Tybalt and is banished from Verona. Juliet and Romeo meet each other in Juliet's room during the night, but Romeo must leave for Mantua by daylight in order for people to not see him. After leaving, Juliet gets into a fight with her parents because Juliet's parents are trying to force her to marry Paris. Once Juliet is threatened by her father and told to go die by her mother, she converses with the Nurse who tells her that she should marry Paris. Juliet acts like she agrees, then goes to see the Friar. This is where the video ended, and where we then began to start into the 4th Act. While with the Friar, Juliet and he came up with a plan to fake her death, so that she can escape from marrying Paris and runaway with Romeo when he returns. We ended the reading near the end of Act 4, Scene 1, as a result of reduced class time. Tomorrow we will most likely finish this scene and another one or so, so not only should you be prepared to read, but also be ready for a quiz.

Hello today is April 22, 2011 and it is Good Friday, which is a religious holiday if you didn’t know. We started off in Mrs. Smith’s class by her saying hello and us not responding as usual because it is too early. The homework for this weekend is to do all make-up work that you haven’t done or have to redo. This includes PLN’s 1, 2, 3 and maybe even 4 if you feel like getting ahead in your work. We then worked in our groups and recited our tableaux viviant performances over act 3 scene 1 in Romeo and Juliet. After that everyone did them in front of the class. Last, we ended the class by watching the scene we all recited which is the fight scene between Mercutio, Tybalt and Romeo. We then left class and went on with our day.

Today started differently, compared to most days in English class. This morning we were not greeted by the beautiful Mrs. Smith, but rather the substitute Mr. Rosenberg. Mr. Rosenberg greeted students at the door, and then started straight into the homework. You only had homework on Monday night if you needed to redo any missing work, or had forgotten to complete PLN's one and two. After talking about homework, students Monday all shared the lines from Friday that students were supposed to memorize and add some creative aspects to, in order to present Monday. Mr. Rosenberg seemed very pleased with the groups, and most of the class scored very well on their presentations. Once the presentations were completed, Mr. Rosenberg started into the reading of Romeo and Juliet. However, in the midst of reading, the bell rang loudly over the sound of the class reading Shakespeare. We ended the reading from Monday on page 74 in my book, but that may vary for the different styles of the book. Mr. Rosenberg told the class that we would attempt to read through Act 2, Scene 3 Tuesday, so if you are going to be absent tomorrow you need to read all of that carefully.

Today was the day we have been dreading all weekend… MONDAY! We came into class and everyone sat down and practically fell asleep on the spot. Then all of a sudden Mrs. Smith broke the silence and got us started on our day. We started off with the usual grammar and naming the subjects of the two sentences of the board. After we finished that awful, but necissary, assignment we started reading our Romeo and Juliet scenes, act 1, Scene 2. That whole shindig lasted us the rest of the hour. Since we read the whole hour we did not have any homework in Mrs. Smith’s (personally my favorite class) wonderful 1^st hour class.

Dear Mr. Richardson, my name is Riley D. I am a freshman at Arapahoe High school. I am extremely impressed with your speech, and I completely agree with it. I believe that the learners and the students of this era are not using their skills of learning and performing to their full potential. This is due to the fact of how teachers and schools are cheating education in such a way for a beneficial salary. If we can teach these students correctly, and let them explore their imagination, these kids will sprout wings and fly. We will definitely see a more successful, fulfilled future ahead of us. I agree with the aspect of focusing on a different education with all of this new technology and budget cuts, instead of focusing on what is better. The best does not always fall on top.

Today was a beautiful Monday in our favorite teacher, Mrs. Smith’s class. :) We started off with the usually grammar in the morning, and then it all went wrong… She asked us for our soundtrack assignment for the book LOF, but only two people had theirs done, Justin and Riley. Mrs. Smith did not find this very funny at all (like Jack and K.J did) and she lectured us about our laziness and work ethic for a good five minutes. So for the rest of class we listened to Justin’s and Riley’s, might I add, amazing project for the rest of the class which was nearly half an hour. Once class ended our only homework was to TURN IN THE SOUNDTRACK ASSIGNMENT! Even though Mrs. Smith was severely mad and disappointed, we still love her.J

Today the class walked into the room with music playing and Mrs. Smith usual greeting. We started our work with grammar, like always. We put punctuation in and made diagrams for both sentences. We also took a quiz over chapters 3-4 of LOF. Today was a dreary day in Mrs. Smith’s class; we started out with grammar as usual, labeling the different phrases. We then worked with a partner to find facts about William Golding, the author of the book we are currently reading, Lord of the Flies. We found facts that basically explain his take on humanity. Golding was in the Royal Navy during World War II, and believes that all men are evil and savage, and society is the only thing that keeps man from killing each other. Golding also says when society is gone, man shows who they really are, and this should be kept in mind while reading the book. Where there is a group of kids away from any society, our class came to the conclusion that the war was the inspiration for Golding’s Nobel Prize winning novel. To have more insight on how war could do this to a person, Mrs. Smith shared a story about her dad while he was fighting Vietnam. What had happen to her dad changed his life forever, and Golding’s life was definitely changed too as a result of war. Afterwards we watched a clip from the show Band of Brothers and that would be followed by questions, after we had nothing to say, and started off into space with our tired eyes, Mrs. Smith made us take a group quiz on chapter one of Lord of the Flies. We have a quiz on chapter two tomorrow. We also discussed our LOF soundtrack assignment, which can be a group project, and is to have at least six songs that capture the emotion and story of the book. Our songs should cover four different areas, critical events, character traits, themes/motifs, and symbols for information see the rubric that was handed out during class yesterday. Our homework is to read up to at least chapter three in Lord of the Flies, redo our “Change the World” paper, to thinking of songs for our soundtrack project for the book, and complete any late work.

Today we walked into Smith’s classroom on a regular bell schedule after CSAP week. We sat down and wrote down our homework in our assignment notebooks which was read “Lord of the Flies”, chapters one and two and there will be a test on it tomorrow. We then did our grammar for Monday identifying parts of speech. The class then watched the last of the pop up poetry groups present which by the way were awesome. Then we finished off class by going over the “Lord of the Flies”, soundtrack project using six songs to describe critical events, character traits, themes and motifs, and symbols. You will also need quotes from the book so pay attention to them.

Today we came into Smith’s class after another day of CSAP. It was a long test but it is half way over. Once the bell rang and everyone was seated Smith told us to get out our day planners. Smith told us we had to attach to the front of our paper and to turn it in to the tanish colored stool and to turn in our CSAP packet to the blue chair at her desk. Today is January 10, 2011. We started class with our Grammar sentence. The sentence for this weak is “my friend alex plays tennis”. Homework for tonight was: looking for examples of ethos, pathos, and logos in magazines, newspapers, and Google images. We need to bring in quality examples of each of them. We also need to explain what appeal is being used. Smith suggests considering color, amount of text, text style, amount of image, type of images, people featured, people’s expressions, what you are encouraged to think or do, and how it uses specific appeal of ethos, pathos, and logos. Smith stated that we would be doing CSAP training to improve our scores from last year. Smith then made us write about a time where we were compelled to buy something and what convinced us to buy it. We discussed some of the convincing factors involved in some of our purchases. Notes about The Rhetorical Triangle came next. The triangle consists of ways a speaker can persuade and appeal to the audience in three different areas: ethos (ethical appeals), pathos (emotional appeals), and logos (logical appeals).

At the beginning of class we did our quiz on labeling the parts of speech of the sentence Mrs. Smith had given us early in the week. We had to identify the noun, verb, subject, predicate, simple sentence, prepositional phrase, preposition, object of the preposition, adjectives, and adverbs. Because it was our first test, she allowed us to use the purple packets we recieved on Teusday. After we had completed our quizes, we had to finish our other quiz. We had to answer all the questions in the packet, a short answer, and a rough and final draft of a paper. The paper had to be writen as a letter to Mr. Booth why we think or don't think uniforms should be enforces at Arapahoe. This was to be writen in extended response form which we did plenty of times last semester. We worked on this most of the week and nobody had an issue finishing. That was all that happened on January 7, 2011.

Today I came to class and we started learning about independent and dependent clauses. We went over the sentence we had yesterday and started on Wednesday in our “Appendix a packet”. The independent clause (also called the main clause) is in every complete sentence, can usually stands alone, and doesn’t start with a relative pronoun or a subordinating conjunction. The dependent clause (also called the subordinate clause),can never stand alone, starts with a subordinating conjunction, and there are 3 types.1. Adverb 2. Additive 3. Noun . After we learned about these and applied it to our sentence she told us we should study it for 5 minutes. Then we started our next assessment, “The Waxed Generation” by Michael Koenigs. We will have time to work on this in class for the next few days.

Our homework for today is to finish the reflection if you don’t in class and to give your parents email to Mrs. Smith if you haven’t yet. On our desks were a note card and a grammar packet that we are going to need throughout the semester so DON’T LOSE IT. We then went over our class expectations for the second semester on Mrs. Smith’s class home page. This semester we will be reading; Curious Incident of Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, Lord of The Flies by William Golding, and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, so you can buy these books and read ahead if you aren’t the best reader. After, we worked on grammar and fixed the grammar in a sentence. Then we worked on our reflection and the guidelines are:
 How did first semester go? What were some of the highlights? What were some of the challenges?
 What are your goals for second semester(personal, class, school)?
 How are you going to achieve these goals? Be specific.
 What are you going to do (create a plan) when you are struggling to achieve your goals?
 What can I do to help you achieve your goals?

Today we decided the presentation order, Nick Farmen typed that up. Today is a writing lab day so students can take their TIB (This I Believe) essays to that to get help on making that essay better. Today we also worked on our final speeches; we took our essays and put it in presentation form, and today, as a class, we went over the TIB rubric, which can be found on her webpage. Then we went over the outline for the speech presentation next week on Monday or Tuesday, and Smith said we need to bring the rubric to the final. Tomorrow is the end of these six weeks so it is the dead line for missing or redo assignments for the past six weeks. The outline for the speech:

Today in Mrs. Smiths class we walked in to the average hello. We did the usual response with one person saying hello back. After this we pulled out our planners and wrote down our homework, like usual of course. Our homework is to come see Mrs. Smith or go to writing lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays to get your TIB essay edited and helped so you get a better grade on it. Also tomorrow, Thursday December 9, is our last day to get our visual turned in for our presentation on our essays. Then, we had to pull out all of our vocab cards from semester one and all these words are… Misogynist is a person who hates woman. Misanthrope is a person who hates all people. Miscreant is someone who does evil deeds. Bibliophile means a lover of books or collector of books. Philanthropist is a lover of people someone who loves to do good deeds. A philosopher lives by logic and lives off reason someone who thinks about the world. Malevolent is wishing bad things to happen to others just like a misogynist. Dismal is someone who is depressed and gloomy about life. Maleficent is someone who intends to hurt someone. Benevolent is someone who wishes well upon people. Benefactor is someone who supports others in any way they can. Benediction is a blessing. Study these words because we will have a test on Monday and part of Tuesday on finals. Study the definition, antonym, and the part of speech for the test on these cards. After we went over all of the words class was five minutes from getting out and then we put our computers away and class was dismissed.

Boom ba boom! The music was really flowing from the speakers this morning, ever since the first bell rang. We started this fine Friday by first turning in our TIB essays and then this week’s vocabulary card on the word “benediction.” If you are home sick today I suggest emailing Mrs. Smith your essay, so you may receive feedback on this assignment. If your TIB essay is turned in late, you will not receive feedback; this can really hurt you if you have to redo this assignment. Once Mrs. Smith had everyone’s essays, we turned off the jams and got down to business. Since today is Friday, we had people present PLN presentations. First up to present was Jon F, who explained an article he read, called “Boys and Boredom.” Jon talked about how boys have a short attention span, and how this affects the world, education, and himself. The next to present, after Jon, was Connor M who read an article about a deadly car crash in Highlands Ranch. Connor preached the importance of driving safe and always wearing a seatbelt while you are in the car. Connor also mentioned the repercussions if you are not safe, and the affects that this can have upon you. Once Connor wrapped up, Noah and Jesse both talked about a “Pot Ponzi Scheme” at Regis and Cherry Creek high schools. This article talked about high school kids investing in a medical weed company and about the police arresting those involved. After the interesting presentation by Noah and Jesse, we had Ryan L present a PLN. Ryan talked about a car crash in Lakewood a little while ago. Since a teenager was involved, Ryan was wondering if Drivers Ed courses were teaching driving skills well enough, and he asked the class just that. After all the PLN’s, we continued to act out our play “Inherit the Wind.” If you missed class today you should read from page 89 all the way through page 101, because lots of important things happened in the trial. When Mrs. Smith saw that it was almost time for the next bell to ring, we put away our books and computers and period one ended.

Today started with a bang! We immediately took out our planners, to write down our homework for the Thanksgiving break. The first bit of homework we talked about was PLN 21; which should be written on the video called “Changing Education Paradigms”. You can find this video on her website that I have hyperlinked here. Once you go to her site, scroll down and you will find the link. Our next piece of homework was very important! We were reminded of our “This I Believe” essay which should be written and edited a few times over break. The reason for completing a solid rough draft over break is because it is due soon after we get back, and it would be good to have Mrs. Smith or someone from writing lab revise your essay on the Monday or Tuesday of our return. After talking about homework, we had some great students present their PLN presentations. We started with Nick F, then Brendan C. Both of their presentations were about PLN 19, called “Lost in Electronica” by George Will. The article they both wrote about talked about the thought processes of men, and their great ability to become easily bored and distracted. After Nick and Brendan presented, we had Connor M present a PLN. His PLN was a free choice PLN, in which he read an article called “One Proud Uncle” by Abmin. In this article, he explained, Abmin talks about how we are focused on receiving a good grade, instead of focusing on learning. This article said that school needs to be about kids’ learning, rather than kids’ scoring. When PLN presentations were complete, Mrs. Smith devoted the day to working on our essays. All of the students in class worked hard to get some work done on their essays. Overall, if you missed class today you missed some great presentations, and need to complete PLN 21 along with your “This I Believe” essay.

In the article What if? by Karl Fisch, Fisch discusses how the use of cell phones and iPods during class has been banned at Arapahoe High School and he disagrees with this rule because he feels these devises can be used as tools to better kids learning. The ideas and concepts in the article matter to me, education, and the world. The ideas in the article matter to me because as a student of Arapahoe I have these rules imposed upon me. I know that these devises can be used inappropriately during school, but I also believe that with the consent of the teacher in question students should be allowed to use their devises to schedule homework and use tools on their phone such as a calculator. The ideas in the article matter to education because schools need to accept that cell phones and other mechanical devises can be used in educational and positive ways and then make their rules accordingly. The concepts in the article matter to the world because mechanical devices such as cell phones are becoming more widely and more frequently used. Therefore businesses, schools, and people will have to adapt and incorporate new technologies. The ideas and concepts in the article What if? by Karl Fisch matter to me, education, and the world.

On this November morning we walked into Smith’s class and retrieved our laptops. Then when the bell rang Smith walked in the door and enthusiastically said, “Hello everybody!” Smith then told us all of our homework for Monday, which was our vocabulary card for the word benefactor, “This I Believe Essay”, and the Scopes Monkey Trial presentation which is due on Thursday. The class period was focused on the Scopes Monkey Trial and we used the class period to work on our presentation for the Scopes monkey Trial. We will be in groups and will choose one of these categories to present on: Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, H L Mencken, William Jennings Bryan, Clarence Darrow, Charles Darwin, John Scopes, evolution vs. creationism: what can be taught? For the presentation power point is not allowed so prezi.com is a tool that is good for making your presentation interesting, also use Glogster.com or Tagxedo.com. Wordle.net is also a good resource to make your presentation interesting and good. The presentation needs to include all of the points below and for bonus points exceed the expectation.

2. Everyone in your group needs to present.

3. Good presentation strategies.

4. Teach do not lecture, it needs to be interesting.

What happens to us when we grow up? how does it connect to what we learn in school: math, english, history, etc...? In Mr. Fisch's "Can't We just Memorize A Formula To Plug Stuff Into?", Mr. Fisch used a quote talking about a child creating an amazing amount of things in ten minutes while his adult mother talks on the phone drinking coffee. I find that as we grow older some of the great ideas we had as kids get completed by other people first and we give up when we could keep going and improve on the original idea and complete our goal. Instead we give up and say, "It's already been done, what's left to add?" All we need to do is listen to what the inventor did wrong and we can do it right then we can be the person who didn't stop and completed our goal.Mr. Fisch goes on to talk about how yes we have to learn the equations that just require us to "plug in" what we need to and be done as well as the equations that take extra steps and extra work to complete. These different equations match lots of different world philosophies because it connects to how we do things and how we get things done as well as how we act and proceed through life.

Hello, it is November 5, 2010 on this awesome Friday morning. It is awesome of course because it is almost the weekend but also today the ski resorts Keystone and Copper open! This is pretty sweet because it’s finally ski season. Today in class we start of my turning in our vocab cards for the word maleficent and also people turn in their other work that is due today because it is the end of 6 weeks. Things that are due are Pln’s up to 16, Google Earth Entries, essay redo’s (if you did them) and all the other missing work you have, if any. We also get back our group quizzes that we took in class yesterday for Book 10 in Homer’s The Odyssey. Today we worked in class on finishing up this work and doing the homework for this weekend. Homework for this weekend is to do Pln 17, and get reading finished for book 12 in The Odyssey and finish the study guide for book 12, if you didn’t finish in class.

The day started out like any other, music playing and going over our homework today which was to turn in the Google earth entries, by Friday everyone should be through PLN 16. After that all we did was read from book 10 of the odyssey if you have your book it starts on page 513. It’s November 1, 2010, the day after Halloween and we shouldn’t have school today because it’s the day after Halloween, and people have probably stayed up late like I did, and other schools don’t have school today. On this rainy morning and we start off in Ms. Smith’s class by getting the new vocab word, maleficent. We then continue reading Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, out of the big brown book at page 490. After reading to the end of book nine we went over a little about what we read and some of the characters. We then got a sheet that we filled out with 12 of people’s names that will be partners for the partner quiz tomorrow over book nine of The Odyssey on page 486 in the big brown book. We then watched a video that was about what we just read. We didn’t finish the video before class ended so we had to stop it and leave for the rest of our day.

In the article "School would be great if it wasn't for students" by Alfie Kohn, it states that instead of blaming teachers for students failing, we need to start blaming the students. I think this is important to me and to education, because it's not always the student’s fault that they are failing. Sometimes the teachers don't go over what the student needs to know enough or they somehow give a student false information, causing the student to fail. Or in every school a lot of students are failing, because not every student is getting the opportunity to choose what they want to be educated in. I think this matters to society, because if we educate these students in what articulate paths that they want to take, we could help out the world and the economy much more efficiently. If we start focusing on what the kids and students want to have as professions, I believe that it would be better for us.

(I posted this kind of late so sorry about that)Today in Smith's class we didn't do much. We started out going over what we will be doing, and I happened to get Monday. We got our vocab word, malevolent. This word is do Friday so make sure you get that done. After the vocab fun we did some very exciting class room reading with chapter fourteen I believe. If you missed this chapter I would try to get that done because we will be reading sixteen through eighteen pretty quick. We also were told to finish PLN12 and to try to have PLNs 8-12 done. Those Google Earth entries that you are all having so much fun with will be due on Monday of next week so remember to get those completed as well.

On October 11, 2010 (the day after my birthday) there was no music playing for the third day in a row. KJ, Jake and jack were all late again. Mrs. Smith told us to pull out our assignment notebook and write down our homework which was just do all your make up work like PLNs and use the vocab word philanthropist on PLN9 and Philosopher in PLN11. Get caught up on GE entries 1-7. Also smith wants all of us (except Connor because he got an A) to come in and see her to re-do our short story essay. She wants us to write a letter to our parents about parent teacher conferences and print it out and turn it in to her. The letter consists of look at participation, growth in writing, and comprehension. She wants us to tell where we want to be at the end of the semester, how we are going to get there and what can she do to help us achieve our goal. She gave us all about 15-20 minutes to complete the letter. After the letter we pulled out our copies of “Into The Wild” and we read part of chapter 11 and the homework was to read the rest of the chapter. Then all of a sudden the bell rang and we finally got out of our first class on a fall Monday morning.

In the video "2020 Vision" by Karl Fisch he explains what he thinks will happen in 2020 what matters from this is if this is all correct then if one company owns everything bad things might come out of it because they might control everything in the world. In his video he thinks that companies will buy other companies until their all owned by one person. This matters to me because if this happens to me in the future then I will have no chance of getting more successful in life. This matters to education because all of the kids have their own laptops so they can be more efficient but it might over load the Internet at Arapahoe and there will be technical difficulties. This matters to the world because everything will all be controlled by Google and there will be no way for somebody else to gain control. To conclude 2020 will be a future that one company owns everything.

We come in on a fall morning, with Smith greeting us at the door. Strangely, there was no music. First Smith told everybody to take out there planner to write down our homework which is to catch up on all the GE entries (1-7), annotations, finish diagram for Into The Wild, PLN presentations for those who have them, and short essay redo. Smith recommends going to writing lab on your nearest off hour to get it done and turn it in. After we went over homework, we took out Into the Wild and read and annotated chapter 8. Then we read “Higher Laws 2” by ourselves first and came up with some interesting points to make about what was said and what questions we had. After that, we listened to the song “Long Nights”. Some connections to the characters that ventured out into the wild was that they were all trying to change to become different people, that they were all trying to become spiritually strong, and that McCandless specifically didn’t seem afraid of anything, and that was the feel that you got from this song. We ended the class by Smith telling us to pack up and the bell rings.

Class started out caliginous today, with no music playing, the weather was cloudy with a chance of rain; many people were late to class which made Mrs. Smith very upset, and most of us were playing the flight simulator on Google Earth. After that we went over our homework our agenda, which was reviewing our vocab word philosopher. Today we learned it means someone that loves to ask questions, and that the antonym is realist. Then we rearranged our desks into a circle to read and discusse chapter 8 of Into the Wild. The main point we talked about today was if the characters we read about, all were idiots that just killed themselves in Alaska. Our homework for Thursday is PLN 9 and 10, vocab card which is Philosopher, Google Earth entries one through seven, and short story easy redo. I just hope that tomorrow will be a better day than the one today.

I read "Dear Denver Post, Would You Be Okay With Us Cheating on the CSAP, Too?" by Karl Fisch, and it was partly about The Denver Post story which disappointed Karl "Summer is almost over, and the disappointment about returning to class . . .". Also, in the following week they talked about the New York Yankees player Derek Jeter cheated by saying he got hit by the pitch when he really didn't and Mr. Fisch is telling us that The Denver Post is a bad roll model for young kids because of the article on Derek Jeter is basically saying it is ok to cheat and he is asking the Denver Post if it is ok for schools to cheat on CSAP's. And this matters to me because it's sending me and other people the message that it is ok to cheat but I know it's wrong. For the other people who think they should cheat I think it will affect the world and other peoples education. My question to you is that if people cheated on tests or on sports would it affect the future?

We walked in this morning music rocking and received a new seating chart and Smith passed back our short story essays. If you didn’t get at least an A go to writing lab and redo it! Then when class started we talked about our homework, which was to find a Walden quote and picture and post it in Google Earth, for the picture hyperlink it into your entry. Then post your entry anywhere on earth that fits the quote and picture. To cite the quote have quotations marks, then in parenthesis put Thoreau after the quote so it will look like this “quote” (Thoreau). Then there were two other pieces of homework that were to finish the vocab card by Friday, and do PLN 8, go to Google reader and pick an article of your choice and write about why it matters to you. After discussing all of the homework we read “Higher Laws”, and annotated it with connections and questions. Then after that story we listened to the songs “Setting Forth” and “No Ceiling” and related it back to “Higher Laws”. The last thing that we did was edit our papers for Google Entry 2. We only edited for about 30 seconds before the bell rang, and everyone packed up their computers and filed out of the classroom.

What Matters

Out the many things that matter to me in my life what matters most of all are California, family and education.

First is my home state of California. California matters to me because of the multitude of childhood memories I have there. One of the most prominent memories is going to the Rose Bowl almost every weekend. I loved going there because I could do a lot of fun things such as riding my bike, walking along one of the many trails or listening to music in the park. Another memory from California was walking the three mile secluded trail surrounding Lake Hollywood overlooking Los Angeles. Although it was a long walk for a five year old to undergo it was a time where me, my mom and my dad could have some good family times. There were so many things to discover on those walks like the eucalyptus trees and the dam. The lake was under the Hollywood sign and we could see Madonna’s house that she painted in stripes. Sometimes we even saw a movie star jogging along the same trail. The last California memory I have held onto for all these years is the ocean. I remember this so much because it was the one time where I didn't have a single care in the world, and was having total and complete fun. Between wake boarding, surfing, and just plain swimming it was hard not to have fun.

My family matters to me. Even my memories of California are about being with family. One reason I chose my family as what matters is because my family has always been there to support me no matter what. They have helped me rise to each challenge in my life with love and support but they have also been there to lift me up when I have fallen. They allow me to be involved in what happens to me and to make decisions affecting the direction of my own life. My family matters to me because when we get together there is no limit to the conversations we have. We talk about good times in the past and what we want for the future. We have lots of laughs. My family treats me with respect and values that I have an opinion and that my thoughts and concerns are valid and important. One of the things that matters most to me about my family is they have taught me to have personal integrity, to stand strong in the face of adversity and to never forget who I am.

Education matters to me. One of the reasons this is so important is that a good education will increase the chance that I will end up with a steady, good paying job. Secondly, this is important because I know that many people in the world go without education during their lives and they struggle in life because of it. The last reason education matters to me is that it will allow me to be a productive member of society. I can make better choices for myself and those in my life with the knowledge I gain.

Now you know why California, family and education are what matter to me.

Today when we walked in Smith was playing her music and working on getting our topic sentence notecards from yesterday back to us. Today is also the last day to turn in late work so MOVE IT! At the beginning of class we turned in our vocab cards before the PLN presentations done by: Justin M.,Connor B., Jordan A, Miles G., and Nick F. After their presentations we went to our Google Earth What Matters Placemarker thing. We made folders for our placemarkers so that we can find our important places. Some of the homework over the weekend is to find and place a placemark along the Yukon Trail in Alaska and name it "To Build A Fire". In the description box we need to post a response about the short story. To copy our work into the description box copy the work from Word and find the placemark, RIGHT click and then go to the bottom and click on PROPERTIES, then paste it. Good bye.
